The third edition of Global Maritime India Summit 2023 is going to be held from October 17, to October 19, 2023 at Bhart Mandapam, Pragati Maidan in Delhi. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways has officially launched the curtain raisers to the Global Maritime India Summit 2023 across several cities in India.
As part of the program the latest GMIS 2023 road show was organized at Chennai on September 4, 2023. The Chennai Roadshow is the sixth in a series of roadshows organized by the ministry as part of the run-up to the main event. Similar roadshows have been organized in Kolkata, Mangalore, Visakhapatnam, Goa, and Guwahati.
The Chennai Port Authority, along with VO Chidambaranar Port Authority and Kamarajar Port Ltd., organised the Roadshow in Chennai.
The roadshow brought together industry leaders, key stakeholders, and enthusiasts in the maritime domain, with the primary objective of emphasizing the Paramount importance of the maritime sector in economic growth. The event served as a platform for in-depth discussions and deliberations covering maritime infrastructure, trade, and development topics.
Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and Ayush was present for the event, with E.V. Velu, Minister for Public Works Buildings, Highways and Minor Ports, Government of Tamil Nadu, and senior state and central government officials. The road show presented short video that included a short message by Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi and Indian maritime industry’s business prospects.
TK Ramachandran IAS, Secretary, MOPSW Govt of India, Pradeep Yadav, IAS., (Additional Chief Secretary to TN Government), S Krishnan IAS, Additional Secretary, Industries, Investment Promotion & Commerce Department TN, Sunil Paliwal IAS, Chairperson, Chennai Port Trust, S Vishwanathan deputy chairperson Chennai Port authority, Bimal Kumar Jha, In-charge, V.O. Chidambaranar Port Trust, and Irene Cynthia, IAS, Managing Director, KPL were present on the dais. All the dignitaries presented the current and upcoming projects undertaken at their respective ports.
While addressing the gathering Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways said India has been aiming to become the best country in the world of maritime sector with efficient and effective performance.
“This is the age of competition in the 21st century, and we need to compete with the best of the best and ultimately become the best. That is our journey, which we need to carry forward efficiently and effectively with our abilities, wisdom, innovation, and scale,” he said
He has given instances of how India’s foray into cruse shipping has been giving fruitful and impressive results. The minister said that a few months ago he flagged off a cruise from Chennai to Sri Lanka, and so far 27 cruises have given the call so far. That’s the power of Chennai international cruise terminal, which has developed the cruise industry within a short span of time, he said.
He also spoke about how integrated ecosystem is going to change the Indian maritime business.
Export or import, whether by ports, inland waterways, or coastal cruises, are all modes that can be made seamless so that they attract investors and human resources required for the maritime industry. The Global Maritime India Summit 2023 roadshow has previously been held in Kolkata, Mangalore, Vishakhapatnam, Goa, and Guwahati. The next roadshow is slated to be held on September 6, 2023.
