Amid the acute shortage of medical oxygen in hospitals across the country, the Centre has imported 20 cryogenic tankers of 10 tonnes and 20 tonnes capacity, and allocated them to states.
Transporting liquid medical oxygen (LMO) from manufacturing plants to states had been creating bottlenecks, especially in making it available from the eastern part of the country to other parts. So 20 cryogenic ISO containers have been imported to augment the transportation of medical oxygen, the government said.
The ministry of road transport and highways, in consultation with the department for promotion of industry and internal trade, has mapped the allocation of the containers to suppliers of states. The entire process is being coordinated by the Empowered Group-II (EG-II) on covid-19.
Hospitals struggled with a shortage of oxygen even on Tuesday, with the rush of critically ill patients requiring hospitalization continuing unabated.
