November 20, 2020: GPH Ispat has started exporting 25000 tonnes of ‘mild steel’ billet to China as the 1st consignment is scheduled to leave Chattogram Port on November 21.
GPH Ispat Limited organised an export ceremony virtually on Wednesday marking the export of MS billet, small bar of metal used as raw material for producing MS rod.
Addressing the ceremony, industries minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun MP called upon the steel industry entrepreneurs to make an effective contribution to the national economic progress by increasing the production of export oriented MS billet and its export to the world market.
He said that although the production capacity of the domestic steel industry is higher than the domestic demand, it is not being fully utilised.
Commerce minister Tipu Munshi spoke as the guest of honour at the online event. He said, ‘It’s a milestone for the country that we are exporting billet to China.’
GPH Ispat chairman Mohammad Alamgir Kabir said that the consignment is the country’s largest export consignment.
Like RMG sector, if the government provides necessary support to steel sector, the unutilised steels would be utilised properly and it would also draw foreign investment, said Alamgir.
Chattogram Port Authority chairman Rear Admiral SM Abul Kalam Azad, Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Mahabubul Alam, GPH Group chairman Mohammad Jahangir Alam and additional managing director Mohammad Almas Shimul also took part in the discussion.
