The Tamil Nadu state government has formed a 22-member Chennai City Logistics Coordination Committee with special officer of Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority, I Jayakumar, at its helm. The Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation will prepare the logistics plan for Coimbatore, while Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) will draw the plan for Chennai.The committee will work with stakeholder consultation for formulating city specific plans.
The committee will map the current freight performance of the city, to assess its present and future requirements, identifying areas for quick reform and long-term plan of action. Implementation of futuristic technologies like drones for delivery of cargo is also being studied.
The state government has already drafted a logistics policy for the next five years, to develop the sector at par with economic growth. The policy includes an integrated logistics plan for the next decade to align with emerging requirements and industry developments.
