The Gujarat State Assembly, on its last day of functioning in the current session on March 31, 2017, approved the proposal of Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) to set up the Gujarat Maritime University under Gujarat Private Universities Act, 2009. This has paved the way for the establishment of the University focused on catering to the education, training and research needs of the maritime sector in the state and the country.
