With Sri Lanka’s import embargo recently lifted, the Hambantota International Port (HIP) believes it is ready to handle the anticipated spike in car imports. HIP claims that, with the support of its cutting-edge infrastructure and skilled team, it will be able to play a significant part in satisfying the increasing demand in the local automotive market.

HIP stated that it has set up a number of specialized facilities to expedite the importation of vehicles. Among these are a special customs inspection bay, a brand-new building with round-the-clock CCTV, and lighting where cars are physically inspected to make sure they meet regional regulations. While import automobiles are given access to temporary storage, vehicles that are awaiting approval or inspection are kept in a secure location.

Wharf clerks and importers who come to the port for the clearance procedure would also have access to basic amenities, according to HIP. In order to provide importers with a smooth experience, HIP’s Vehicle Processing Stations also manage the documentation required for vehicle release. The port’s recently constructed car import yard was created especially to handle car imports. The yard is built to efficiently handle both local and transshipment vehicles, with a storage capacity of at least about 4000 vehicles. HIP places a high premium on security, enforcing stringent access control to guarantee that only authorized individuals are allowed to enter the yards.

The entire port is completely walled and under constant CCTV observation, including the jetty and temporary storage areas. Additionally, foot and mobile patrols are used to ensure accountability and safety throughout the entire vehicle handling procedure. According to a statement from HIP, the port’s lighting levels also satisfy international requirements, guaranteeing excellent visibility and security all around. Since 2018, the port has successfully managed substantial numbers of vehicles, demonstrating its capacity to handle large-scale imports. HIP will be better equipped to manage the rising demand for car imports thanks to the $2 million investment in upgraded infrastructure.
