Hapag-Lloyd has inked a long-term arrangement with Goldwind, a worldwide renewable energy solutions company headquartered in Beijing, China, to receive 250,000 tonnes of green methanol per year. Green methanol, a blend of bio- and e-methanol, would reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by at least 70% while meeting all applicable sustainability certification standards, according to the German shipping business. By 2030, the Hamburg-based Ocean carrier intends to cut its fleet’s absolute GHG emissions by around one-third from 2022 levels. The green methanol ordered will help avoid up to 400,000 tonnes of CO2e emissions per year when compared to traditional fuels.

Goldwind plans to establish a new green methanol production facility near its existing project in Hinggan League, China, with the first early volume deliveries expected for 2026. As part of its continuous sustainability initiatives, Hapag-Lloyd is converting five 10,100 TEU chartered boats, in conjunction with Seaspan, to a methanol dual-fuel propulsion system beginning in 2026. This action follows the recent decision to invest in 24 new container ships equipped with low-emission dual-fuel LNG engines.
