Kamarajar Port Ltd (KPL) had commenced handling the export/import of automobiles through its dedicated General Cargo Berth in September 2010. Based on the growth of the automobile industry in and around Chennai, KPL entered into agreements with major manufacturers such as Nissan Motor India, Ford India and Toyota Kirloskar Motor India, with volume-based rebates, to export their vehicles. Given the congestion in Chennai city and the parking yard facility available with KPL, other major heavy machinery and equipment manufacturers like Komatsu, Kobelco, Caterpillar, etc. also started exporting their cargoes through KPL.
As on March 16, 2017, KPL has handled 2,12,183 automobile units, as against 1,98,260 units in the same period of the previous fiscal, up 7.02 per cent. The projection for the current fiscal, till March 31, 2017, is 2,25,000 units, which will be the highest ever volume handled in a year.
One of the OEMs, Nissan Motor India, achieved the remarkable milestone of exporting its 7,00,000th (7 lakh) car through the General Cargo Berth of KPL at the end of the third quarter. Since it commenced handling automobile export, KPL has facilitated the shipment of 11,00,000 units as on date.
