Hyderabad regional ring road to expand under Bharatmala

The Centre has decided to take up the northern portion of the proposed 350km-long Hyderabad regional ring road (HRRR) project along Sangareddy-Narsapur-Tupran-Gajwel-Yadagirigutta- Choutuppal section of NH-161 under phase-1 of the Bharatmala Pariyojana.

The Centre is investing over 1 lakh crore in ongoing and upcoming national highway projects in Telangana, including 20,000 crore in the Hyderabad regional ring road project, a communique by Union tourism & culture minister Kishan Reddy’s office said on Monday.

According to Reddy, the length of highway roads construction in state from 2014, when the BJP-led gove-rnment took over at the Centre, till now has raced past the construction done by successive central governments between 1947 and 2014.

“Between 1947 and 2014, the total length of national highways in state was 2,500 km. Between 2014 and 2022, another 2,500 km were added, doubling the length of national highways,” he said.

Reddy also pointed out that from an annual construction of over 139.33 km in 2014-15, highway construction reached a peak of 364.71 km per annum in 2018-19 before the disruptions caused by the pandemic.

The various projects being taken up by the Centre include widening of roads and connecting popular tourist destinations in a bid to boost the economy.

Talking about national data, he said daily construction of highways in the country increased nearly 300% from 12 km per day in 2014-15 to 37 km per day in 2020-21. “In 2014, the length of national highways in the country was 91,287 km. This increased 50% to 1.47 lakh km by June 2022,” he said pointing out that while hundreds of projects are being undertaken under the Bharatmala Pariyojana and Sagarmala to unify the country and coastal areas.
