India Ports Global Ltd, a special entity created to facilitate India’s engagement in the development of Shahid Beheshti Port at Chabahar in southern Iran, will open offices in Tehran and Chabahar in order to promote regional trade and transit.
Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal is currently on a visit to Iran to review progress on the development of Shahid Beheshti Port, a key gateway for India to enhance connectivity with Central Asian countries.
A Memorandum of Understanding for development of Shahid Beheshti Port at Chabahar was signed in May 2015 with India Ports Global starting operations in December 2018.
“Since India Ports Global Ltd assumed operations of Shahid Beheshti Port, it has handled over 4.8 million tonnes of bulk cargo,” said a statement from the shipping ministry.
Sonowal earlier commissioned six mobile harbour cranes at the Shahid Beheshti Port to Indian Ports Global Chabahar Free Trade Zone managed by India Ports Global.
Sonowal held a meeting with Iranian Minister of Roads and Urban Development Rostam Ghasemi and both the countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding with an aim to smoothen the movement of seafarers from both the two countries. Sonowal also met with Iranian Vice President Mohammad Mokhber with whom he underscored the importance for both countries to collaborate on further steps to make Chabahar port an instrument for regional growth in trade shipment.
