India’s Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has given Bangladesh a proposal for laying a pipeline to carry natural gas from the country to its northeastern states.
The proposed line will run from Chittagong to Tripura and help reimburse the crisis of Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) in the North-East Indian region, India’s Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said.
“We are laying a pipeline from Siliguri to West Bengal to Parvatipur in Bangladesh. There is already a pipeline for carrying diesel from Numaligarh Oil refinery in Assam to Siliguri.
“In lieu of it, we have given the proposal for a gas pipeline from Chittagong to Tripura. We are pursuing the matter diplomatically and I would also visit Bangladesh soon,” said Pradhan.
“The pipeline if approved by the Government of Bangladesh would be laid down by the side of the railway lines which pass along the Indo-Bangla international border,” Pradhan added.
The two countries are currently undertaking the Akhaura-Agartala Rail Link project that will connect the two country’s railways.
