Indian Railways has received around 19 bids from wagon manufacturers for supplying 90,000 wagons in the next three years. The bidders include Titagarh Wagons, Texmaco Rail & Engineering, Hindustan Engineering and Industries, Oriental Rail Infrastructure, Jupiter wagons, Jindal Rail Infra, Cimmco and Om Besco Railway Wagons. All the companies that qualify technically will have to match the rate offered by the lowest bidder. The tender is valued at Rs.30,000 to Rs.35,000 Cr.

This mega procurement plan is in line with Indian Railways strategy to move more and more cargo within the country and also to neighbouring countries. Indian Railways plans to move 40-45% of the domestic cargo by 2030. To achieve this target Indian Railways will need 300,000 wagons till 2030.
