Volvo Trucks has introduced the country’s first road train, a move that is expected to transform long-distance transportation and mark a major milestone for India’s logistics industry. Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, officially launched the project in Nagpur. It was created in collaboration with Delhivery Ltd.
Vehicle lengths up to 25.25 meters are allowed under the Road Train concept, which was included into Indian rules in 2020. This setup significantly increases cargo capacity by using a tractor unit to tow several trailers. The Volvo FM 420 4×2 tractor, a 24-foot containerized intermediate trailer, and a 44-foot semi-trailer make up Volvo’s Road Train, which has a cargo capacity of 144 cubic meters, which is 50% greater than conventional semi-trailers.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) have certified the Volvo FM 420 4×2 Road Train for use between Delhivery’s hubs in Nagpur and Bhiwandi after extensive testing.
