India’s first and Asia’s longest bi-directional Chenani-Nashri Tunnel on NH-44 will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 2.
The construction of the tunnel started in May 23, 2011 in the lower Himalayan mountain range. It cost the government Rs 3720 crore.
Minister for Road and Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari also shared the information on Twitter that PM Modi will be inaugurating the Chenani-Nashri Tunnel.
The Chenani-Nashri Tunnel, an example of India’s engineering marvel, is 9.28 km and will reduce the travel distance
between Jammu and Srinagar by 30 km. It is located at an elevation of 1,200 metres.
The tunnel is also equipped with Integrated Control System to monitor communication, ventilation, video surveillance, power supply, SOS call box, fire fighting, etc.
Once it is opened for public use, it will be a saviour during times when road transport is affected by multiple landslides and other types of extreme weather conditions.
