The fresh budget allocation of 15 crore for the project has given a new impetus to efforts to transform the Beypore port in north Kerala into a major seaport.
The allocation, according to exporters involved in the port’s development, also approved the state government’s aim to boost coastal shipping efforts that would give Beypore more exposure. The port’s existing facilities will be upgraded to attract international cargo vessel operators. The latest investment, according to port officials, will primarily fund dredging and the building of extra berths for the safe anchoring of larger vessels. According to them, the monies will also be utilised to build new goods yards and godowns. The upgrading of facilities at Beypore will enhance the possibilities of cruise services to international destinations. The government has already adopted measures to promote Beypore to an international water sport tourism destination.
