JNPT launches Mobile Environmental Monitoring Vehicle

• Accords top priority to end use of plastics
• Emphasizes sustainable growth

JNPT has always stood by the concept of sustainable development and has been taking several initiatives to make the port and its surrounding region into a green and pollution-free hub. Under the aegis ofSwachh Bharat Mission of the Government of India, JNPT is committed to ensure hygiene, waste management and sanitation across the port area.

On the occasion of World Environment Day, Shri Neeraj Bansal, Chairman I/c, JNPT administered Environmental pledge to all the Port employees in the presence of HODs.As part of the celebration a Street playwas organized by JNPT employees on this years United Nations Environment Program theme of “Beat Plastic Pollution”.

With an aim to further fine tune the environmental work at JNPT, a Mobile Environmental Monitoring vehicle was inaugurated by Shri Neeraj Bansal, Chairman-in-Charge JNPT. This vehicle will be operated and maintained by Indian Institute of Technology, Madras for real time air quality monitoring of the port. The vehicle is fitted with an air pollution measuring machine and will visit various places in and around the port and will carry out detailed study on identification and estimation on the sources contributing air pollutants in particular particulate matter concentration at JNPT and development of expert system for a prediction of air quality index using real time air pollutant concentration using combination of sophisticated instrumentation system and low cost sensors network, so that authorities can take corrective steps to make sure that the quality of air is on par with acceptable levels.

Also, JNPT Training Centre regularly conducts workshop and training programs to create awareness and provide environment protection initiatives’ training. This month a 5 days training program on Health, Safety and Environment is organized, where participants would benefit to deal with safety majors at workplace and minimal impact on the environment.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Bansal said, “Preserving our planet and protecting the earth are no more luxuries but absolutely essential for the survival of human kind going forward. JNPT, is completely aware of this situation and has been implementing several eco- friendly initiatives like setting up solar panels, sewage treatment plant, multi-purpose utility launch for sea water cleanliness, solid waste management at the Port and upcoming dry ports with a view to achieve sustainable growth. He requested all the Port employees to avoid the use of plastics in their day to day life and act responsibly towards the environment conservation.”

The world environment day event concluded with planting of trees in the JNPT area to spread awareness about the importance of protecting the environment.
