JNPT has launched phase two of Rs.2029 crore dredging project by awarding a project management contract to domestic consulting group Tata Consultancy Engineering. The project involves deepening the port’s 21-mile fairway to 15 metres that will allow it to accept ships with capacities of more than 12500 teu. The work is scheduled to be completed within 2 years of selecting a contractor through competitive bidding process. The benefits of the dredging include handling bigger vessels using tidal window, increase in future container traffic, reduced ocean freight cost per teu, faster turnaround of larger vessels and optimum utilisation of capacity.
