Kandla Port Trust (KPT) crossed the 105-million tonne (mt) mark in cargo handling in 2016-17, registering 105.44 mt as at 0800 hours on April 1, 2017, an increase of 5.39 mt as well as 5.39 per cent over the previous fiscal despite the sluggish trend. This was the second consecutive year the Port crossed the 100-million tonne throughput figure in total. It is the only Major Port in the country to have achieved this feat.
The break-up of cargo at Kandla and Vadinar (part of Kandla Port) was as follows:
* Dry cargo at Kandla: 35.39 mt
* Liquid cargo at Kandla: 13.05 mt
* Liquid cargo at Vadinar: 57 mt
Positive trend was witnessed in coal, salt and agri product cargoes, whereas there was a drop in the handling of finished fertilisers, steel and timber logs. There was also an increase in the volumes of crude oil and POL, though the handling of edible oil fell.
The new cargoes handled by the Port during the fiscal year under review were boulder stone, dolomite, yellow peas and stone chips. In addition, the Port handled cars and trucks through RoRo vessels. Approximately 13,500 vehicles were handled during the year, the release disclosed.
