In Karnataka, the central government has sanctioned eight projects under the Sagarmala scheme. These projects are designed to improve the efficiency of existing ports and enhance the overall maritime infrastructure. The investment of ₹493 crore is expected to significantly impact the state’s economy by increasing trade volumes and improving logistics. The projects will also create job opportunities in various sectors, including construction, shipping, and logistics.
Project UNNATI is a significant initiative under the Sagarmala Scheme, focusing on major ports under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways. The New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) is a key player in this project. The aim is to enhance the operational efficiency of major ports and improve service levels. The initiatives under Project UNNATI at NMPA include increasing container cargo, improving service levels for containers, and setting up new facilities.
One of the notable initiatives is to attract container cargo from Mysore and surrounding areas. This initiative has already been implemented successfully. Additionally, the project aims to improve the service level of containers by providing necessary equipment at berth number eight. This enhancement will streamline operations and reduce turnaround times for vessels, ultimately benefiting traders and consumers alike.
However, not all initiatives under Project UNNATI have been successful. Plans to set up an LNG terminal on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) basis were dropped due to the non-availability of a sterile area in the port. Similarly, a mechanized fertilizer handling berth project was also dropped due to negative market response. These challenges highlight the complexities involved in port development and the need for careful planning and execution.
The infrastructure upgrades at New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) are a crucial part of the sanctioned projects. These upgrades are designed to enhance the port’s operational capabilities and improve overall efficiency. The details of the infrastructural work include the construction of new berths, strengthening existing roads, and improving truck parking facilities.
One of the major projects involves the construction of Berth No. 17, which has a project cost of ₹177.37 crore. This new berth will increase the port’s capacity to handle larger vessels and more cargo. Additionally, the strengthening and widening of existing roads will facilitate better transportation of goods to and from the port. The project also includes the construction of a truck parking terminal, which will improve logistics and reduce congestion around the port area.
Moreover, the upgrades include the construction of essential amenities such as canteens, dormitories, and clinics for workers at the port. These facilities will not only improve working conditions but also enhance the overall efficiency of port operations. The comprehensive approach to infrastructure development at NMPA reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing port-led development in Karnataka.
