Maersk could need 6 million MT/yr of green Methanol as its bunker fuel by 2030. The shipping giant currently has ordered for 13 container ships that can run on green methanol, the first of which is due for delivery sometime middle of 2023. These ships will have a combined cargo carrying capacity of 194,100 teus, which could be around 4.6% of the company’s total current capacity. These mega box ships will need about 500,000 mt/yr of green methanol to keep them running.
But this green methanol demand could rapidly grow towards the end of the decade said, Morten Christiansen, Head of decarbonisation strategy at Maersk. “When we look at our targets of achieving 25% of our total fleet to be running on green fuels by 2030, then depending on the size of our fleet that will exist by then, we fore see something like five to six million tonnes of green fuels demand at our end.” Of this 25% fleet that will use green fuel as bunker we would want a majority of it to use methanol and the remaining could be biodiesel or ammonia.
