In the second half of 2022, the bascule bridge that connects Kidderpore and Garden Reach will be closed for at least two months for a refurbishment of the 50-year-old structure. The bridge’s custodian, the Kolkata port, will issue a global tender for the repair, which will take around six months to complete. For the overhaul, the bridge, which lies above a narrow creek that permits ships and barges from the Hooghly to reach the Kidderpore dock, would be closed for at least two months.
The port officials had recruited Modjeski & Masters, an American consulting firm, to provide a long-term solution to the bridge’s ongoing issues. The port will float the tender based on the suggestions submitted.
