Amar Bahadur Verma, hailing from Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh and a resident of Diva, was working as an electro-technical officer on MV Asian Bulk, which set sail from Sohar in Oman on February 2. The ship was bound for Mesaieed in Qatar.

The family said the last that they heard from him was on May 29. “We realised he was missing when we received no calls from him for a few days,” his elder brother Jagdish Prasad Verma, who lives in Nagpur, said.

When they were unable to contact him for three days, the family reached out to the shipping company. According to company officials, the last time Verma was seen on the ship was on June 2. After lunch time, his colleagues realised that he was missing and raised an alarm, according to the officials. Qatar government officials then boarded the ship to investigate the matter and are currently inquiring into Verma’s disappearance. Captain R K Kadam, the Belapur office manager of Hermes Ship Management, when contacted by The Indian Express, said, “We have not received any correspondence from the local authorities regarding the incident but we will inform the family as soon as we get any updates.”
