As part of the development of multimodal logistics parks in the country, National Highways Logistics Management Ltd and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the development of a multimodal logistics park at Jalna in Maharashtra.

The proposed park will serve as a functional dry port for the region and connect Samruddhi Marg and Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridors.

“This infrastructure will promote the export of agro products and also transform Jalna into an automobile hub of Marathwada region,” said Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari.

National Highways Logistics Management Ltd is a special purpose vehicle formed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for the development of multimodal logistics parks.

The multimodal logistics parks are being developed under public private partnership via design, build, finance, operate and transfer or DBFOT mode.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is the principal body for the development of 35 multimodal logistics parks in the country. The work on the first such park located at Jogighopa in Assam has already started.

The government is planning to develop the multimodal logistics park in the hub-and-spoke model wherein the parks will have seamless connectivity with roadways, waterways, railways and airspace.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday unveiled the National Logistics policy which aims to bring down India’s logistics cost from current 13-14% of gross domestic product to single digits by 2030 and break into the top 25 countries in the Logistics Performance Index prepared by World Bank. Development of multimodal logistics parks is expected to help the country meet the aims under the logistics policy.
