Delta Ports Mormugao Terminal Private Limited (DPMTPL) commenced operations at Berth 10 and 11 of Mormugao Port, marking a significant milestone in the port’s capabilities. The newly commissioned Liebherr crane was used to unload gypsum from the MV Akson Meisa at Berth 10.

Delta Ports Mormugao has a 30-year concession agreement with Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) to operate the two berths. The firm will invest Rs 140 crore to upgrade the two berths. “Delta Ports is also contemplating a pilot project to introduce autonomous vehicles into its operations. Delta Ports is making all-out efforts to revive and re-establish container operations, ensuring Mormugao regains its stature as a key hub for maritime trade,” said Shamil Ahmed, the chairman of DPMTPL.

Container movement at the port came to a halt several years ago due to operational challenges. “The concessionaire has a free hand to offer rates for feeder vessels. We are also in touch with operators of feeder vessels, and Delta Ports will continue the discussions. We should see the container operations start in 3-4 months,” said MPA chairperson N Vinodkumar.

Delta Ports said it is determined to bring back container traffic. DPMTPL is a subsidiary of Group Delta. “This is a milestone for the port because it is a win-win situation for the port and for the concessionaire. They will be investing Rs 140 crore, and they will try to increase the business of the port. So the port will be getting more investment. It was difficult for the port to invest Rs 140 crore because of financial constraints,” said Vinodkumar.

Ahmed Mohiuddin, the chairman of Group Delta, said that warehouses will be built before the monsoons at Vasco for cargo, particularly fertiliser cargo.
