The Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) needs to procure a mobile harbour crane for which The Union Ministry of Shipping has asked the port authority to pursue the public private partnership (PPP) route. In case the port is unable to find a private party, then the ministry has offered to pay for it.

Procurement of the 100-tonne mobile harbour crane is part of the tender to redevelop berth 10 and 11 under the PPP model. The port’s mobile harbour crane broke down in 2020, following which the feeder service for container cargo has also been sketchy.

Due to the crane breakdown, container service was restricted at the port, resulting in diversion of cargo to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority. MPA had initially sought funds from the MoS under the Sagarmala mission, however, the MoS refused this.
