With the introduction of electric cars and hybrid cranes as part of its sustainability measures, the Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) is making major strides in lowering its carbon footprint. As part of a transition to greener port operations, MPA will use battery-powered trucks and hybrid-electric harbor cranes for container handling in an effort to modernize operations and support the country’s goal of carbon neutrality.
At the moment, trucks with diesel engines run through the port, adding to fumes and pollutants. However, the private operator of berths 10 and 11, Delta Ports Mormugao Terminal Pvt Ltd, intends to replace diesel trucks with 28-ton electric tipper trucks by January 2025. The MPA’s objective of having a completely electric port in the upcoming years will be in line with these zero-emission vehicles. Two Liebherr mobile harbour cranes, which can handle up to 38 containers per hour and are propelled by both diesel engines and electric motors, will also be arriving at the port. Imported from Germany, these cranes will lower emissions and increase operational efficiency.
The implementation of these green technology is a major step towards MPA’s objective of becoming carbon neutral by 2047, in accordance with national sustainability objectives, given that the organization produces 32,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually. Additionally, the action will increase operational efficiency, establishing Mormugao Port as one of India’s premier models of sustainable port operations. The surrounding community should benefit from better air and a healthier environment as a result of this green transformation.
