Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi and MSC Group President Diego Aponte have signed a memorandum of intent to work together on sustainability and energy transition initiatives. Eni, an integrated energy corporation dedicated to becoming carbon neutral by 2050, and MSC, a global leader in transportation and cruise services, intend to broaden their successful partnership to new geographies while focusing on decarbonizing operations.
The alliance will investigate the use of LNG and low-carbon energy carriers such as HVO, bio-LNG biofuels, and renewable-based lubricants in MSC’s logistics and cruise fleets. Renewable energy options will also be investigated to help MSC decarbonize its facilities. The deal aims to generate synergies across a variety of businesses, including logistical services, multimodal transportation, and agro-industrial activities for biorefining feedstocks. Furthermore, it will include novel sea, rail, and road transportation technologies for HVO biofuel storage and distribution.
Other major areas of collaboration include offshore platform decommissioning, cooperative R&D activities, and partnerships within Eni’s Open-es platform, which promotes sustainability throughout the value chain. The agreement also highlights circular economy principles, such as the use of renewable and recycled plastics onboard, fleet waste management, and the possibility of redeveloping decommissioned Eni facilities and assets.
