The arrival of MSC’s Deila, a mega container ship at Vizhinjam Port is on trial basis, following which a formal inauguration will be organized. The trial run is intended to check the port’s capacity to accommodate the large mother ship. Earlier, three more ships had arrived at the port as a part of the assessment process.
Over the next two months, it is expected that 10 more ships will dock at the port, with commercial operations slated to begin shortly thereafter. The first vessel to arrive during the trial run was Maersk’s “San Fernando.” Denmark-based company is the second-largest of its kind in the world. The “Deila” measures 366 metres in length and 51 metres in width, with a capacity of 13,988 TEUs. The vessel, coming from Mauritius, will reach Vizhinjam after a stop in Mumbai. Following its arrival, MSC’s feeder ship, the “MSC Adu-5,” will also arrive next week. The “MSC Adu V” is 294.12 metres long, 32.2 metres wide, and has a capacity of 4,738 TEUs. After arrival of each ship the efficiency of Vizhinjam ports equipment will be evaluated such as efficiency of cranes and mooring equipment.
