Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) decided to hire a new locomotive of higher capacity (1,400 HP), replacing its old locos (700 HP) for hauling standard rake sizes notified by the Indian Railways for enhancing the overall efficiency in the Port railway system.

RITES Ltd provided the high-powered WDS-6 to MbPT on February 25, 2017 and it was put into operation from March 1 after commissioning by RITES.

By doubling the engine power, Mumbai Port Railway can now haul a full rake from Wadala to various sidings in the network of the Port’s railway system and improve efficiency to a great extent. Deployment of this engine will avoid delays and, in turn, improve the turnaround time of wagons in the Port railway system. The Port will be able to turnaround a rake much faster in 10-12 hours instead of the 15-16 hours or even more taken earlier. This will help to ensure a rake’s availability for projects like ‘Vibrant India’ and for commercial operations at a faster rate.
