Myanmar exporters look to reopen border trade with India

August 13, 2020: Businesses in Mandalay, Sagaing and Chin regions look forward to reopen border trade with India post-COVID-19. The Upper Myanmar India Association hopes to start exporting products to the South Asian neighbours, said U Ba Yan, Association chair. The Association connects Indian traders in auto accessories, peas and medical products, with their counterparts in Myanmar. Otherwise traders in India interested in doing business with Myanmar do not have any contacts.

Mandalay, Sagaing and Chin have been the three main border trading routes wih Northeast India since 2017.

Trade at the Tamu and Reed border checkpoints was worth $201.24 million, including $177.49 million in exports and $23.74 million in imports, in fiscal 2018-19. Last year October – December the trade was worth $34 million.
