Myanmar’s maritime trade reaches over $21.9 billion in first 10 months of current FY

August 11, 2020: Myanmar’s trade through sea route reached over US$21.9 billion in first 10 months of present fiscal year (FY) 2019-2020 which started in October, according to figures released by the Commerce Ministry on Sunday (Aug 9).

As of July 31, the country earned over US$8.56 billion from maritime export while its import shared over US$13.3 billion.

This fiscal year’s sea trade saw a slight increase by over US$1.39 billion, compared to the same period of last fiscal year 2018-2019 when it registered over US$20.5 billion, the ministry’s figures showed.

From Oct. 1, 2019 to July 31 of this FY, the country’s foreign trade totaled over US$30.9 billion with over US$14.6 billion export and over US$16.3 billion import.

About 80 per cent of Myanmar’s foreign trade is done through sea-borne trade and its border trade is being conducted with four neighbouring countries China, Thailand, India and Bangladesh.

Myanmar also announced that it students has registered a pass rate of matriculation examination at 32.06 per cent nationwide in the 2019-2020 academic year, according to a release from the Ministry of Education on Sunday.

The figure showed a slight increase from 31.44 per cent in the 2018-2019 academic year.

According to the release, a total of 910,229 students sat for the matriculation exam in the 2019-2020 academic year countrywide, of whom 291,798 students passed.

During the period, Yangon region received the pass rate of 32.79 per cent, the ministry’s figures said.

In the previous academic year 2018-2019, 851,524 students appeared for the examination across the country, of whom 267,696 passed.

The Ministry of Education usually releases the results of matriculation examination in June, but this year’s results were delayed two months due to the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak in the country.
