Technical standards and guidelines for procurement of cold-chain components are being revised by The National Centre for Cold-Chain Development (NCCD). These new set of rules will help increase capacity utilisation, fuel efficiency and minimise the carbon footprint of cold chains operating across India.
The new regulations will be followed by all the Central and state government bodies setting up cold chain facilities across the country. NCCD is also developing a mobile app for collecting and digitising data relating to cold chain components. This data will form the basis for policy making. Indian cold chain sector currently puts up a turnover of around Rs.2 lakh crore and is growing at a rapid rate of over 10 per cent. The sector is forecast to reach Rs 5 lakh crore turnover, maybe by 2030 or 2032.
