Development cost of the port is estimated at VND 50.82trn ($2bn) and will be done in two phases. The first phase of the project involves development of two docks and is projected to be completed by 2030. In the first phase the port will be able to accommodate ships up to 250,000 dwt.
The existing Ba Ria – Vung Tau seaport has seven berths which are designed to handle a container throughput of up to 7.66 million teu per year. The average container throughput over the past three years has exceeded 8m teu per year which is over the designed capacity of the container berths.
