The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) unloaded 1,262 freight rakes in January 2025, marking the highest number of monthly unloads in the ongoing fiscal year, the railway zone said.

With this, the total number of freight rakes unloaded in the current financial year reached 10,666 by the end of January, NFR said. The railway transported and unloaded essential commodities such as rice, sugar, salt, edible oil, and fertilizers, along with coal and other goods, across its network.

Assam accounted for the highest number of unloads, with 673 rakes, including 296 carrying essential commodities. In other northeastern states, 111 rakes were unloaded in Tripura, 18 in Nagaland, 11 in Arunachal Pradesh, eight in Manipur, and nine in Mizoram. Additionally, NFR unloaded 230 freight rakes in West Bengal and 202 in Bihar.

The increase in freight movement was attributed to infrastructure upgrades, including track doubling in key sections and improved terminal handling facilities. Enhanced monitoring has also helped reduce turnaround time and improve unloading efficiency, the statement said.
