Onboard the Singapore-flagged vessel M/V NYK Fuji, Ocean Network Express (ONE) completed the third trial of marine biofuel. During bunkering at the Port of Singapore on February 11, the ship was refuelled with 1,300 tonnes of marine biofuel product. The biofuel was completely utilised by the M/V NYK Fuji in 45 days. After passing through the Malacca Straits on February 21, the ship started its trial and continued on to the ports of Durban and Cape Town before returning to Southeast Asia.
ONE employed a blend of Brown Grease Methyl Ester (BGME), a form of Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME), and Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil as a biofuel (VLSFO). The blend of BGME with VLSFO was supplied by BP and testing was performed in collaboration with Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore.
The trial showed that the product is a valid drop-in fuel that can help reduce emissions in shipping without any modifications to marine engines or fuel infrastructures. ONE has stated that the trial marks a step forward to reducing carbon footprint and achieving its environmental sustainability target of net zero emission by 2050.
