Onion exports fail to rise after government lifts the ban

The central government has lifted the ban on exports of onion, but it has fixed a minimum export price of Rs.550 per tonne and an export duty of 40%, which are preventing the exports from rising.

The Janori ICD near Nashik is one such market which has seen a subdued growth in exports of onion even after the government has lifted the ban. Before the ban was enforced the ICD used to export 100 containers of onion, which has reduced to around 40-50 containers even after the ban is lifted. With the minimum export price and export duty it has become difficult for Indian onion exports to compete in the global market, which is the reason for the export volumes dropping.

The ICD is well equipped with a pack house, storage facility and Customs clearance service. It moves its exports through JNPA.
