The survey work for Rs 8,200 crore worth outer harbour work has got underway in Odisha’s lone Major Port in Paradip.
The outer harbour work forms the part of Government of India’s ambitious Sagarmala project. The outer harbour would have the cargo handling capacity of 150 million tonne per annum, said port officials.
The depth of underwater sea level besides hydrological contents of harbour seabed is being scientifically examined by a consultant farm engaged by Paradip Port Trust. After the submission of survey and detailed project report (DPR), the construction work would begin hopefully towards the year end.
The PPT is presently equipped with 127 million tonnes cargo handling capacity per annum. The deadline for completion of construction of outer harbour is 2025 year. Its cargo handling capacity would rise manifold reaching 325 million tonnes per annum capacity once the outer harbour becomes operational, said port officials.
PPT has already inked a concession agreement with Paradip International Cargo Terminal Private Limited (PICT). It is a special purpose vehicle (SPV) set up by United Liner Agencies India Private Limited which is a part of JM Baxi Group for construction / development of a multipurpose berth through public private partnership (PPP) mode on build, operate and transfer (BOT) basis in order to cater to the container traffic and clean cargo at Paradip Port.
Presently, rail handles 63% of the port’s traffic; pipeline caters to 27% while conveyor systems and road account for 8% and 2% respectively.
