Port Houston exceeded three million TEUs in September at a record-breaking rate. Compared to the same period in 2023, the port has reported 3,120,589 TEUs so far this year, a 10% increase.
In September, loaded imports increased by 4%, and thus far this year, they had increased by 8%. Loaded exports are up 10% so far this year, mostly because of the ongoing demand for resins, although being down 8% for September.
In comparison to September 2023, the total volume of containers in September was 1% higher at 329,462 TEUs.
The largest ship ever to dock at Port Houston’s Bayport Container Terminal, the CMA CGM Cassiopeia, arrived in September. The ship, which was 1,188 feet long and 150 feet wide, brought 11,356 TEUs with it, and during its stay, 7,327 movements were finished.
Project 11, the continuing Houston Ship Channel Expansion, will allow 15,000 TEU neo-Panamax boats to regularly call Bayport by the end of November. The Channel will be widened from 530′ to 700′ as part of this project, along with additional efficiency and safety enhancements.
Steel imports increased by 25% in September compared to the same month previous year at Port Houston’s multifunctional facilities. As of the first nine months of this year, the total tonnage across all public facilities at Port Houston is at 39,444,673 tons, representing a 4% increase over 2023.
