In order to increase the resilience of inland commerce and transportation services, the Port of Amsterdam has joined the TRANS2 program (Transition to a Climate-proof Rotterdam Hinterland TRANSport).

The program, which is coordinated by Deltares, unites 14 important partners, such as the Port of Rotterdam, Rijkswaterstaat, Koninklijke Binnenvaart Nederland, and the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management.

In order to promote sustainability and operational continuity throughout the region’s supply chains, the organizations are collaborating to create a comprehensive model for climate-resilient inland transportation.

A team of experts is planning fleet upgrades and transition routes, evaluating the progress of a future-proof, climate-resilient fleet, and determining what is required to maintain or even improve capacity and dependability.

Although the main goal of this partnership is to increase grip in the face of climate change, inland navigation faces other important challenges.

If feasible, the System-Dynamic (SD) models and Digital Twin Waterways are used to analyze climate-adaptive solutions. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in November 2023 by the Ports of Bilbao, Amsterdam, and Duisport to investigate the creation of an intra-European renewable hydrogen corridor that would connect Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands end-to-end.
