China’s Shanghai Port and Germany’s Port of Hamburg pledged to collaborate on the construction of a green shipping corridor at the 2024 North Bund Forum, which opened on Tuesday. The goal is to support the sustainable growth of the global shipping sector and the green transformation of the two ports.
In order to speed up the decarbonization process, the Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission, Hamburg Port Authority (HPA), COSCO Shipping Lines Co., Ltd., and Shanghai International Port (Group) Co., Ltd. signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU). These parties will collaborate with energy suppliers, cargo owners, terminals, shipping companies, and manufacturers of technology and equipment.
According to the MoU, all parties are required to further their collaboration in a number of areas, such as infrastructure development, preferential policies, information sharing, and the development and usage of shore power at the ports.
Creating green shipping corridors enables more relevant parties to take part in the collaborative low-carbon initiatives, making it much more than just a dispute between two ports.
Before this latest collaboration, Shanghai Port had agreements with the Port of Long Beach and the Port of Los Angeles to construct green maritime routes.
