PSA Corporation Ltd (PSA) and Ocean Network Express Pte. Ltd (ONE) are collaborating on an initiative for recovering and recycling refrigerant gas from reefers, which will be used for making a greener supply chain.

PSA is the first in Southeast Asia to commence trials on the use of reclaimed refrigerant gas for reefers, with ONE being the first shipping line to successfully complete the trials using their reefers with PSA.

Refrigerant gases are potent greenhouse gases which contribute to global warming.

Recovering, cleaning, and processing the gas to be re-used and pumped back into the reefers cuts carbon emissions.

PSA has initiated the use of reclaimed refrigerant gas released from the cooling systems of reefers in its effort to build a sustainable supply chain and has announced plans to extend this initiative to other shipping lines and partners.

PSA will also recover the commonly used refrigerant gas that is being released during the maintenance and repair works of reefers.

“Close collaboration with a shared purpose is key to achieving a resilient and sustainable global supply chain ecosystem,” said Ong Kim Pong, Regional CEO Southeast Asia, PSA International.

“With the strong and steadfast support of our customers and partners, PSA is one step closer in ‘greening up’ supply chains and shaping the future of Singapore as an innovative and sustainable global maritime hub.”

PSA recently released its operational and financial results for 2021, posting revenues of $4.6 billion, a year-on-year increase of 11.7 per cent. The group also handled a total of 91.5 million TEU last year, an increase of 5.6 per cent compared to 2020.
