One year after its introduction, the Port of Antwerp-Bruges has released the findings from its Single Wagon Load model. By implementing a rail vision that involves consolidating single railcar traffic (Single Wagon Load) within the port territory, Railport and the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, in partnership with Infrabel, sought to improve the quality of rail transportation.

Bundling means that Railport sets up a “group purchase” for the first/last mile, or transportation within the port. Participating businesses can have railcars brought to them from a marshalling yard or picked up and sent to a marshalling yard for a set cost.

Participating freight payers are said to enjoy better rail transit in the port area after ten months of bundling. Many of its customers now pay less for their first and last mile than they did in the past, the port observed. Reaching 10.15 million TEUs in the first nine months of the year, the Port of Antwerp-Bruges reported a 6.8% rise in container throughput in October.
