Non-basmati white rice export quotas have been announced for Bhutan, Mauritius and Singapore. Bhutan will be permitted to export 79,000 metric tonnes of non-basmati white rice, while Singapore and Mauritius would each receive a quota of 50,000 tonnes and 14,000 tonnes, respectively.
Following a prohibition on the sale of broken rice last year, India startled importers this month by enforcing a ban on the export of non-basmati white rice.
A 20 per cent duty on parboiled rice went into force this month and will remain in effect until October 15 in India, which is attempting to control inflation ahead of state elections later this year. India exports more than 40 per cent of the world’s rice, and given the low stock levels with other exporters, any reduction in shipments might increase food costs, which were already rising as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine last year and erratic weather.
