The foundation stone for the Roll-On-Roll-Off (Ro-Ro) facility at Cochin Port was placed by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal. The new Ro-Ro facility will be built in the Mattancherry Channel at Cochin Port, between Q1 berth and South Coal Berth, as part of the Sagarmala programme. It will entail the construction of a 615-square-meter RCC jetty structure, as well as the strengthening of existing roads and other related work. The Ro-Ro facility will encourage safe and sustainable transportation once it is operational. It will also boost cost-effective coastal cargo transit using Ro-Ro ships, reducing traffic congestion and reducing accidents. It will also serve as a catalyst for promoting and facilitating environmentally friendly, cost-effective modes of transportation.
The project, being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs11.06 crore with 100 per cent funding under Sagarmala Programme is scheduled to be completed in 9 months.
Meanwhile, Shantanu Thakur, the Union Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways has also unveiled the new logo of Cochin Port Authority during the function held at Cochin Shipyard premises.
