One of the two major projects being undertaken by the Cochin Port Authority (CPA) under the Sagarmala project in the financial year 2022-23 is the establishment of a roll-on roll-off (ro-ro) handling facility between Queue 1 berth and South Coal berth. According to CPT chairperson Dr. M. Beena, the project’s initial proposal was filed to the Union government in May 2021, and a revised plan was submitted in March of this year. “The suggestion is being actively considered by the Centre,” she said. The proposed ro-ro handling facility between Q1 berth and South Coal berth entails the building of a 615-square-metre reinforced concrete jetty, as well as auxiliary work such as upgrading the existing road surface up to Indira Gandhi Road.

The completion of the project will also help coastal movement of cargo, including hazardous chemicals. The ro-ro facility will decongest roads, thereby minimising accidents.
