Come October 1, 2024 and shipping lines will stop issuing PIN codes. All the containers arriving from Africa, the Middle East, India, and Pakistan will have to use the Secure Chain system at the port of Rotterdam. The system further ensures restricted access to authorised hauliers, rail operators, and barge operators. With support from all the shipping lines, Rotterdam Port has now been able to implement a unified and secure procedure for handling of import containers, eliminating the traditional process of using PIN codes.
The secure chain system was earlier successfully implemented for Latin American and North American cargo. The Secure Chain system has so far handled nearly 275,000 containers, embraced by approximately 950 shippers/ship agents and 800 inland operators.
