The Saudi port operator, Saudi Global Ports (SGP) has announced the first phase of its upgrading and development programme at First and Second Container Terminals in King Abdulaziz Port Dammam (KAPD).
Jacobs Engineering Group (Jacobs), which will be the Civil Engineering Consultant of the project, will upgrade the First Terminal which has been in operations for more than 30 years, while the Second Container Terminal will also be expanded to host the next generation of mega vessels.
Sustainability is the main feature of this work, as the civil engineering team focuses on reducing the environmental impact of terminal operations. Smart port designs and upskill jobs will also be introduced to improve SGP’s productivity and to test new technologies in connectivity and automation.
Furthermore, Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) said it will proceed with plans for the port’s infrastructure, using digital transformation to enhance integration and connectivity within and outside Saudi Arabia and to compete with the largest international ports.
“We are taking progressive steps towards transforming Dammam into a leading international container port, equipped with digital and smart capabilities, and continue to contribute towards Mawani and the Kingdom’s plans for a transformational transport and logistics sector,” commented SGP’s Chief Executive Officer, Edward Tah.
