As a new wave of Covid-19 pulls most of the city to a halt, Shanghai has built 655 trains since March to help move imported products that arrive by water inland, keeping supply networks humming.
There has been a 42 percent increase in rail-sea transit volume since the beginning of March compared to the same period last year, with 84,000 twenty-foot equivalent units. Container throughput at Luchaogang, a major port and cargo railway terminal in the city’s Pudong sector, hit a new high of 40,690 TEU in March, a 35 percent increase over usual levels.
An average of 880 trucks passed through Luchaogang each day in April, accounting for 90 percent of the city’s total. On April 15, 505 trucks were loaded at the railway station, a new high, and throughput is expected to reach 50,000 TEU this month.
