The Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways has announced plans to develop shipbuilding clusters on either coasts of India, replicating similar facilities present in China, Korea and Vietnam. The ministry is identifying locations on the east and western coasts with 1000 acres of land and waterfront of 4-5 kilometers. The goal is to establish three to four shipyards that match world standards for each cluster through collaborations with commercial organisations and the execution of the Sagarmala programme to finance essential infrastructure. The given plan will be worked upon in cooperation with leading shipbuilding companies across the globe and preferably in South Korea and Japanese ones and the creation of subsidiary companies at the selected sites. These collaborations will bring in knowledge, technology and also potential customers for shipbuilding industry.
