Shipping lines are attempting to increase rates on the India – US lanes

In spite of the existing over capacity shipping lines are trying to increase rates on the India to US routes. From June onwards, shippers will have to pay a $500 extra on each container being shipped from India to the US East Coast.

Shipments to the US West Coast will be even more dearer with $1200 being charged extra for containers enroute from India. CMA CGM and Hapag Lloyd have announced a Peak Season Surcharge of $500 to the US East and Gulf coasts. In addition, Hapag Lloyd has also announced a similar surcharge of $1000 for every container being moved to the US West Coast. A General Rate Increase of $1,200 per container is expected from Mediterranean Shipping Company for containers being moved from India to US West Coast and Canada. Maersk will be collecting a Peak Season Surcharge for all types of cargo. It is $560 per 20-foot container, $600 per 40-foot container and $760 per 45-foot container.  Industry experts opine that shipping lines stand better chance for raising rates to the US west coast as the capacities on these lanes are rather full as compared to the US East Coast.
